Press Release
PCI-SIG Elects Graphics Industry Heavyweights to 2005-2006 Board of DirectorsPCI-SIG Also Begins Definition of I/O Virtualization SpecificationPCI-SIG DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE, SAN JOSE, CA – June 6, 2005 – The PCI-SIG®, the Special Interest Group responsible for PCI Express™ industry-standard I/O technology, today announced the addition of two graphics industry leaders to the 2005-2006 board of directors. ATI, a supplier of 3D graphics, HDTV and digital media silicon solutions, and NVIDIA, a provider of graphics and digital media processors, will help drive future PCI Express technology development in their new roles. PCI-SIG also announced a new working group to define a specification for I/O virtualization. Recognizing the great strides made in processor and memory virtualization, the PCI-SIG sees the need for an industry standard to address complementary technologies for I/O virtualization. Building upon the successful PCI Express Base Specification, the workgroup will create specifications addressing two major segments: single root complex designs of the traditional desktop and smaller N-way servers; and multiple root complex designs such as those found in blade servers. Extensions to PCI Express will enable a standardized method for a single physical device to present itself as multiple virtual devices to such a system in order to provide for seamless device sharing and improved data isolation. The new board members begin their tenure as the 2005 PCI-SIG Developers Conference kicks off today in San Jose. More than 400 developers will attend two days of technical training on the latest specifications from PCI-SIG, including a first look at the requirements framework for I/O virtualization. Eighteen member companies will showcase current PCI Express designs in the exhibition hall. "ATI and NVIDIA have been active participants in many PCI Express working groups for several years. Each company’s contributions to technical development and marketing initiatives have helped PCI-SIG produce a winning specification," said Tony Pierce, chairman of the PCI-SIG. "We welcome both companies and the extensive industry experience they bring to the table." Individual board members are as follows: Julian Hammersly, Advanced Micro Devices; Gord Caruk, ATI; William Wu, Broadcom; Mike Krause, Hewlett-Packard; Al Yanes, IBM; Ramin Neshati, Intel Corporation; Richard Solomon, LSI Logic; Tony Pierce, Microsoft Corporation; Michael Diamond, NVIDIA. The board also named the following officers: Tony Pierce as chairman and vice president, Al Yanes as president, Ramin Neshati as treasurer and Richard Solomon as secretary. The latest PCI Express specifications discussed at the conference are available to members at http://www.pcisig.com/specifications/pciexpress/. Benefits of PCI-SIG MembershipPCI-SIG members can participate in the review of all PCI specifications before they are released to the industry. If you are interested in becoming a member, please visit the PCI-SIG Web site at www.pcisig.com/membership. PCI-SIG members develop and maintain PCI Express specifications and are actively involved in defining compliance criteria and checklists, as well as other technical enabling collateral. As an additional and extremely valuable benefit of PCI-SIG membership, members are given the right to receive patent licenses from any other member of our organization with necessary claims of patent embodied within our specifications. These licenses may be limited in scope to an implementation of a particular specification, but must be granted to all members on reasonable and non-discriminatory terms. About the PCI-SIGThe PCI-SIG is the Special Interest Group that owns and manages PCI specifications as open industry standards. The organization defines and implements new industry standard I/O (Input/Output) specifications as the industry's local I/O needs evolve. The PCI Special Interest Group was formed in 1992, and the organization became a nonprofit corporation, officially named “PCI-SIG” in the year 2000. Currently, more than 900 industry-leading companies are active PCI-SIG members worldwide. The PCI-SIG’s current directors are employed by the following PCI-SIG member companies: AMD, ATI, Broadcom, HP, IBM, Intel, LSI Logic, Microsoft and NVIDIA.
