Hot Plug Workgroup

To all PCI SIG members:

Many PCI SIG members have had questions about the new Hot Plug
working group. I want to outline how this was formed, who the
company members of the workgroup are, and how PCI SIG members
can keep informed on the committee progress.

Compaq submitted an Engineering Change Request (ECR) to the
Steering Committee in early Jun requesting a change to the PCI
specifications to support their proposed "Hot Plug"
requirements. Because of the scope of changes involved, the
Steering Committee voted to approve the launch of a new
Working Committee to work out the details of the specifications.
A chairman was selected for the workgroup by the steering committee
who pulled together a kickoff meeting in late June and selected
additional members to form a core competency of engineering
knowledge in this area.

The Hot Plug Working Group quickly reached full membership with
requests from more than 30 PCI SIG companies wanting to participate
in the workgroup. The companies represented on this working
committee are Compaq (Allen Goodrum, Chairman), Adaptec, Intel,
TI, IBM, Novel, Microsoft, and an associate member from the
"Compact PCI SIG". For practical considerations of
manageability, efficiency and effectiveness, the PCI Hot Plug
Working Group could not accommodate everyone who wanted to be
involved.

Members not on the working group can keep informed of progress
through the PCI SIG Arbiter monthly newsletter, PCI SIG
newsflashes and postings on the PCI SIG Web page
(www.pcisig.com. Compaq's webpage will also have updates and
will be "linked" to the PCI SIG webpage. Per the PCI SIG
bylaws, all PCI SIG member companies will get to review the
specifications prior to final ratification by the steering
committee.
