NEWS RELEASE
TUNDRA SHIPS QSpan
Major Manufacturers, Including Bay Networks and Newbridge Networks, Implement
QSpan To Bridge Motorola Processors To The PCI Bus
Kanata, Ont., September 3, 1996 - Tundra Semiconductor Corporation today
announced shipment of the QSpan(tm), a PCI Bus bridge targeted at Motorola(r)
microprocessors. The QSpan is a glueless PCI solution for the
68360(QUICC(tm)), MPC860 (PowerQUICC(tm)), MPC821, and the 68040 processors,
and requires minimal glue logic for MPC602, MPC603, and 68302 processors.
With QSpan, designers using Motorola processors can now take full advantage of
the low cost and high performance of PCI bus technology. "Embedded Motorola
processor users now have a PCI bridge which enables them to use their legacy
Motorola- based architectures with the latest PCI peripherals." said Richard
O'Connor, Director of Marketing and Business Development at Tundra.
"The QSpan from Tundra Semiconductor is the ideal bus bridge for Motorola
customers who are introducing PCI into their system designs," said Mike
Shoemake, Program Manager, Networking and Communications Operation, Motorola
Semiconductor Products Sector. "Tundra provides a complete PCI solution for
our integrated communications controllers, especially the 68360 QUICC and
MPC860 PowerQUICC families."
Bay Networks, a worldwide leader in the internetworking market also announced
today its intent to use the QSpan in several of its next-generation Fast
Ethernet Network Management Modules. Within the Bay Networks application, the
QSpan directly connects the MPC860 to a PCI Bus populated with Fast Ethernet
devices.
"We intend to use the QSpan in several of our Motorola MPC860-based
next-generation Fast Ethernet Network Management Modules," said Tim Riley,
Director of Network Management Product Marketing at Bay Networks. "With the
QSpan, we are able to integrate off-the-shelf PCI products into our design.
This improves performance, reduces our product cost, and significantly
shortens our development time."
Newbridge Networks Corporation, the world leader in local and wide area
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and Time Division Multiplexer (TDM)
networking, is also using the QSpan in its 36170(tm) ATM switch.
"The QSpan will provide us with a glueless interface between Motorola's
peripheral intensive QUICC processor and our embedded PCI system bus. After
considering several other options, the QSpan-QUICC combination proved to be
unbeatable in terms of cost, performance and ease of use. We believe the QSpan
will help us bring our new leading edge products to market quicker than was
previously possible," said Mike Freeston, Senior Design Engineer, ATMnet
development, Newbridge Networks Corporation.
Other QSpan Customers
Other customers currently using or evaluating the QSpan include Andrew
Corporation (Richardson, Texas), Atlas Computer Equipment, Inc. (Santa
Barbara, California), DSC (Dallas, Texas), Image Manipulation Systems Inc.
(Andover, Minnesota), Nortel Limited (Bramalea, Canada), Pivotal Networking,
Inc. (San Jose, California), and U.S. Power, Inc. (Brooklyn Park, Minnesota)
Development Support
Tundra provides a complete suite of development tools for designers working
with the PCI Bus, including device drivers, evaluation boards, and executable
models, in addition to its acclaimed applications engineering support and
documentation. As a result, designers can get their new products to market
faster and at a lower cost than ever.
