Having studied and compared the 2 chip-sets, I disagree with you :
The VX is indeed the low cost, low functionnality part (10 $ less than HX).
The HX does'nt support the SDRAM, but supports :
- a bi processor mode with cache coherency (2 P54C)
- the advanced APIC
- a bigger DRAM (up to 512 Mbytes, 8 RAS lines)
- protection of DRAM by parity or ECC (no protection on VX).
- more internal read and write buffers allowing an higher throuput
for PCI masters (up to 115 Mbyte/s sustained in write burst mode).
