Another slightly contrarian answer: if you reduce the clock rate on the
bus, and do your own SPICE modeling, you can put lots of slots on a single
PCI bus, up to the hard limits in the protocol. The number depends on the
bus speed and your electrical layout.
If you do this, please publish your results! If anyone's done this sort of
work, I haven't seen it, and I'm sure many of us are curious.
