Yes, it's not recommended, it's required.
Reason is for AC grounding (signal integrity).
Notice the pin out follows signal - signal - gnd - signal - signal - gnd
format, where gnd is an AC gnd, either gnd, 5V, 3.3V, etc. so each signal
is paired with at least one ground.
This was discussed at length here a while back.
