The PCI SIG hot plug workgroup has completed their work on the PCI Hot-Plug
specification. This preliminary version is being distributed for industry
wide comment prior to the formal revison 1.0 to be distributed to the PCI
SIG membership for ratification at the end of April. The review revision
0.9 has been posted on the PCI SIG webpage (http://www.pcisig.com) and is
available for download. Any comments on the hot plug spec. may be posted
to this reflector or e-mailed to (pci.hot.plug@compaq.com)
This new specification outlines a standard architecture for server based
systems that will allow the "hot" swapping or addition of new adapter cards
on the PCI bus. This is accomplished by support from the OS (using some of
the ACPI PM capabilities) to quiesce adapter operation and issue power down
to the selected PCI slot. Although motherboard changes for power
control/switching will be required, standard adaptor cards may be used.
