If you are using an off the shelf PCI device, try getting a unique
Device ID allocated to you from the vendor (and just carry on using
the chip's Vendor ID). That way you will have a unique way of
identifying the card without having to pay out for a Vendor ID. Most
chip manufacturers appear to have this service.
