Brian,
I am getting tired if it as well, and we will take corrective
action shortly. Unfortunately, the spammers have the initiative,
and by the time we update the filters, they have changed message
formats. We have actually blocked a number of messages in the
past but it seems almost nothing can stop them all.
Your suggestion of limiting postings to the subscriber base is
a good one -- but has one problem. Some of our subscribers,
particularly from large companies such as Microsoft or Compaq,
get the postings from a secondary reflector. That is, the
subscription on our list is xyzzy@microsoft.com and that breaks
out to who knows how many actual subscribers.
If we change the posting filter to members-only, those secondary
recipients won't be able to post (unless they subscribe
directly). I'm willing to do this if nobody on the list
objects. The largest inconvenience will be if you try to
post from an address other than the one you are subscribed
with.
