440BX motherboards & PCI streaming

We used to set bit 1, reg 0x50 of the PCI controller
to zero, to force the controller into PCI streaming
mode on LX motherboards. The performance 
increase was dramatic, from about 35Mb/sec to
over 110Mb/sec for DMA reads. 
We notice though that this doesn't have any effect on
BX motherboards (Intel N440BX Server motherboard)
so the burst lengths are again limited to 8 dwords,
resulting in a very poor DMA read performance.
Has anyone seen this too and knows why PCI streaming
doesn't seem to work anymore and knows a workaround
for this ?
