RE: - Low Profile re-defined
The "Low Profile PCI" ECR is not for a mezzanine form factor. However, I
think the ECR is misnamed because the term "low profile" conjures the
mezzanine image due to the common use of "low" for refering to height (often
component height when used in electronics) and the common use of "profile"
for refering to the side(s) projecting the least area. Since this ECR is
for another card form factor that fits into the same, standard PCI connector
and "low profile" has more to do with the form factor of the desired system
implementation, I suggest the three (including this ECR) SIG-sanctioned card
sizes be termed something like Type A, B, and C for easy reference.
Sean or My-hanh, you two seem to be pretty familiar with this ECR, please
tell me; what's the deal with the funny (and probably quite hindering)
component and trace free areas on the mech drawings?

Subject: More PCI Form Factors RE: Mini = Small ?
In my haste to get to other things, I forgot a couple other
PCI form
factors. So, here's an updated list of the PCI form factors
I'm aware of:
- Standard PCI: similar to an ISA card, long and short
spec, with mfgs
making cards of all dimensions in-between.
- PMC: PCI Mezzanine Card, a PCI extension of IEEE Common
Mezzanine Card
(CMC) family.
- PC-MIP: another mezzanine card, smaller than PMC,
ANSI/VITA-29 (should've
been MPMC).
- PC104+: PC104 (~3.75"x3.5" stacking ISA form factor) with
stacking PCI
bus (should be PC104+PCI).
- Small PCI: ~same form factor as Cardbus and PCMCIA cards
(should be PCI
Cardbus).
- Mini PCI: a very small mezzanine card and DIMM style form
factor (too
many 'types' in this spec, PC-MIP might be more popular).
- Low Profile PCI: similar to the short card in Standard
PCI, but smaller
(sounds like a mezzanine form factor; should be named
something like Type C
Standard PCI card with the other two being named A and B [if
ECR is
approved]).
- CompactPCI: a eurocard formfactor implementation, PICMG.
- Passive Backplane PCI: same as Standard PCI except
motherboard resources
are also located on a plug-in card, PICMG.
- Passive Backplane PISA: similar to passive backplane PCI
except generally
for half-length cards because ISA and PCI signals are
available on a single
card-edge connector instead of two, not sure if this spec is
controlled by
some manufacturers' group.
Got any more?
