Re: Is is possible to receive a cheep SubVendorID?

Hello,

I like the idea of "acquiring electronic access to the spec".
I think our company would participate in "shared" Vendor ID group,
if prize go down (under $200).
I agree with Dave, that it is not easy to meet PCI spec (I believe,
PCI went the wrong way with 3ns - 11 ns requirements, which is very difficult to
meet with FPGAs - specially if it is old or for 66 MHz bus),
but it is possible, more than that I tested some PCI designs from "valid" vendors, which did not met specifications.
So "registration" does not protect the world from bad cards.

Also I like Patrick's "funny" Vendors IDs, but
I would like to see less "ONEs" in Vendor ID from the practical
point of view: In XILINX or ORCA (Lucent) FPGAs this "ONEs"
take a lot of resources, specially for output multiplexer, that makes
meeting 11ns timing a little more difficult.
And simple number is easy to remember.
I would go with Patrick's
" "600d", which gives the right impression about your
quality if you squint hard enough (good)."

Sincerely,
Michael Mazlin

Well, you could go for something like "dEAd"
or "d1Ed" (which no company paying $2500
would probably want).

Or, perhaps "FAEE" which sort of gives the right
idea, if you squint hard enough (free), or "600d",
which gives the right impression about your
quality if you squint hard enough (good).

Unfortunately for you young punk designers, "C001"
is taken, but "CA75" (cats) is not, and neither is
"bAAd". "d00d" is still available, too. (I think
vendor/subvendor of "bAAd" "d00d" would be "C00l".)

There's a dual-use one not taken, "b01d", for brave
people who snub their noses at the SIG, and also for
people from Boston who have a quaint way of
pronouncing 'bird'

Apparently, automakers aren't seriously considering
the PCI bus for vehicular applications -- "5AAb" is
still free.

But, what you really want is one no one else will
use; one which is "5AFE".

Seriously, if there's enough interest, we could
form a LLC or something for the sole purpose of
acquiring a sharable number from the SIG and,
of course, acquiring electronic access to the
spec (not that they charge _too_ much for the
CD, but it'd be nice when new specs come out).

If 10 people signed up, it'd be < $300; 20 people,
under $150. This mailing list may not be the
proper forum for this, so email me with how big
of a check you'd write for a safe number, and
if there's enough response, we can start a
separate mailing list and figure out how to
escrow the money until we can get a SIG
membership.

Thanks,
Pat Maupin
