It's not so much that it is 'just one little 'ol ID' amongst literally
thousands. Dan's point was how can you pick one that won't get
assigned next week, month, or year by the SIG to some hapless company.

At that point, there will be three groups of victims. All the folks
that used your 'home-grown' ID to spawn renegade boards; the company
that paid $2500 and released possibly several expensively-developed
boards that fail mysteriously in the field; and all the users whose
machines go belly-up because two other entities got in a peeing match
over vendor ID issues.

I would agree. Since yours is an embedded system, do what you like
'under the covers'. And, if Patrick wishes to create a 'pooled' ID
for folks, this is certainly no worse than having AMCC or others
mete out Device ID's to their customers, while letting them use
their Vendor ID. I wish Patrick good luck in his endeavor.

Hmm. You wouldn't be referring to Microsoft, now would you? 8-)

[I use NT in the workplace under protest (actually, I use it under
VMWare, which is running on SuSE Linux 6.4, so I can get easy access
to a free, open operating system when necessary, and my favorite
set of development tools).]
