Advantages of 3.3V Signaling??

I am designing a new card, and of course, will use the Universal connector and
make the card compliant with both 5V and 3.3V signaling.  But my question is,
what is the advantage of 3.3V signaling?  Is the goal to eventually to also move
to 3.3V power rails only, and eliminate the 5V power rails, or is that not even
part of the plan?
