Memory address range & PCI programming

Hi,

Q1) During initialization, the initialization code
will determine the size of the memory being requested
by the PCI device by writting all "F"s to the BARs.
Then it will assign a base address to that register. I
have a question regarding actually how this device
know what is the upper limit of this memory bars?

Q2) Does anyone know where can I find tutorial or
references on how to generate a PCI transaction? The
Bios only provide configuration cycle through the
interrupt calls.
