Hi thomas,
I am able to scan the PCI devices at MPC8240 boot prompt.

It lists the following

[VxWorks Boot]: P

Scanning function 0 of PCI busses 0-7, devices 0-30
bus dev fn venID devID class rev MBAR0 MBAR1 IPIN ILINE
00 00 00 1057 0003 060000 11 00000008 00000000 01 00

I am able to boot PMC successfully.
Can U make out anything from the above for the problem ?

Thsnkd in advance
Ram

I guess you'll have to look directly at the PCI bus near the Dec chip and
find out what he is complaining about.
i suggest bringing up the system without the PMC and doing a PCI bus scan to
find out where everything gets placed in address space.
then doing the same with the PMC.  You will probably have to use your
emulator or a debugger since it seems you cant boot when it is in.
any chance the PMC has built in settup code?  that might easily give you
fits. it might even be a broken PMC board or PCI slot.
you are going to have to eliminate the possibilities one by one.  Knowing
exactly who is supposed to be answering the master abort will narrow the
search for why he isn't.  sounds like a job for a PCI bus analyzer to start
with.

hi thomas
I have a CPCI user slot.  I am plugging the PMC ( Artesyn board) into that.
Without doing any initialization  for the card, (No mapping) still I am
unable to bring up the system.  As per your thought, if I do some mapping,
there may be possiblity that it is addressing to an address on other card is
occupying.  Hope I am right:)  MPC8240 is the host as well as bus arbiter.
Artesyn board comes with MPC750 and CPC700.  Both boots up independently
through their bootcode.  Artesyn waits for bus enumeration.  At the first
stage, I am just enumerating the bus for Artesyn board in my code.

Whether I enumerate or not, both times my MPC8240 based system hangs up.  I
suspected whether it was anything to do with the bootcode of artesyn and
tried disabling that.  Still my MPC8240 doesn't bootup (DEC211433 reports
fatal bus error as this is responsible for downloading the image from
ethernet).

Thanks in advance
Ram

A master abort is caused by no devsel being asserted in response to a PCI
command.
That is because it is addressed to an address on other card is occupying. Or

there may be a parity error
on the address phase of the PCI command.
the questions you need to answer are
what type of command is it
is there an address parity error
what other device should be responding to that address

how are you attaching a PMC (PCI mezanine card ?) to a PCI slot? they have
completly different physical connectors.

A card based on the 21143 normaly doesn't receive interrupts, but creates
them.

what is your youst CPU that is configuring the system

hi,
I have a system with MPC8240 as a arbiter.  I have plugged a PMC card into
the unused PCI slot.  My system hangs up reporting fatal system error.  My
system (MPC 8240) uses a PCI based ethernet controller(DEC 21143).

When I stepped through emulator, I found that my DEC card gets interrupted
reporting Master abort.  I don't know what I am missing in my
initialization. Can anyone point out what might be the problem???????
Without the PMC card, my system works fine.

What are all the possible causes of Master abort in a PCI transaction?.
