Configuration accesses not working

Although it is not recommended, we have been performing configuration
register reads and writes in our x86 drivers by directly accessing the IO
ports located at addresses 0xcf8 and 0xcfc. This has always worked just
fine.

Recently we have run into problems on certain motherboards. These seem to be
dual Socket 370 boards with the Serverworks ServerSet III HE-SL chipset. We
have experienced the same problem on both Tyan and SuperMicro motherboards.
The configuration accesses do not seem to be successful on these boards.

We have previously used the Tyan 2500 slot 1 motherboards with the
Serverworks ServerSet III HE chipset. On these boards the configuration
accesses work correctly.

Any ideas what the problem could be?
