There's a Xilinx PCI Tutorial (PCI Fundamentals and Concepts) at
http://www.xilinx.com/products/xaw/pci/pci_cust_tutorial.pdf

It is about 100 pages long, and is in a "presentation slide"
format.  Not an unreasonable place to start.
