Manfred's big/little endian description is the correct one.

I've found that if you can get transfers work in a consistent manner software engineers who work with Motorola processors are
familiar with having to mash things around to get the results they want.

There are chips that do PCI to PowerPC.  Even if you're not going to use one of these it may be worth having a look at them and
following their approach to the problem.
