I've used a variety of extender cards, sometimes even doubling
them, without any problems on standard PC 33MHz PCI bus machines.
Not sure about cable though, I suppose it would work if the
impedance and crosstalk were controlled. Why are you using a
cable instead of a PCB for the bus extension? A PCB extender card
should offer better power and signal integrity.
