Pierre!
imo the cause of the trouble is neither the backplane nor
the power-supply. I had the same problem observed with
proprietary systems running a lot of additional power
consumptive high speed electronics about 11 years ago.

In my case I observed quite a high voltage drop over the
connector after some time of operation. It seems that the
tin plated pc ps-connectors degrade with time and increase
resistance and, hence losses, which led to significant
heating of the connector pins, the wires, and the board.

My remedy was:
I soldered a bypass between the ps-cables and the backplane
with a 4 sqmm cable, one for ground, and one for 5V and that
was it. If you want to stay detachable, you can add high
current connectors in the bypasses.
